What does TAG Grading TCG mean?

1. TCG Means Trading Card Game

TCG (Trading Card Game) is the collective term for card games where players collect and trade unique cards to build playable decks.

2. TAG Means Technical Authentication & Grading

TAG is a specific company (TAG Grading) that specializes in grading trading cards using advanced, automated technology and AI (artificial intelligence) [1.1, 1.3, 1.5].

Unlike many traditional grading companies, which rely on human judgment, TAG uses high-precision equipment to objectively analyze the card.

3. The Process and the Result

When you submit a TCG card to TAG for grading, it goes through a process that produces two main results:

  • Grading (1–10): The card is given a numerical grade on a scale of 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint/Pristine) . This is the industry standard for determining the condition and value of the card [1.1, 3.7].

  • TAG Score (0–1000): TAG also provides a precise score of 1000 points (TAG Score) which provides a more detailed picture of the card's condition and "strength of character" [1.1, 1.5].

  • Digital Imaging & Grading Report (DIG Report): Each card receives a detailed digital report, showing images of identified defects and a score distribution for individual attributes such as centering, surface, corners, and edges [1.1, 3.4].

Summary of the Criteria Considered

The grading is mainly based on four categories [3.4]:

Criterion Description
Centering How well the image and borders are centered on the card (often measured in percentage, e.g. 50/50).
Surface Absence of scratches, misprints, stains, or other surface defects.
Corners How sharp and flawless the corners are. Rounding or whitewashing detracts.
Edges The condition of the edges around the card. Wear, chips or unevenness will reduce it.
