Nintendo Wii U

The Nintendo Wii U is a video game console released by Nintendo in 2012 , the successor to the Wii. It was part of the eighth generation of consoles, competing with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The Unique Concept

The Wii U is best known for its innovative main controller, the Wii U GamePad . This large, tablet-like controller features a built-in 6.2-inch screen , allowing players to use it as a second monitor, or in some cases, play the entire game on just the controller (off-TV play). This concept of dual screens and flexible gameplay was a major inspiration for Nintendo's later and more successful console, the Nintendo Switch.

Important Points

  • First HD console: The Wii U was Nintendo's first desktop console to support HD resolution (up to 1080p), providing a major visual upgrade from its predecessor, the Wii.

  • Wii U GamePad: The controller featured a variety of features such as a touchscreen, camera, microphone, and motion sensors. It created unique gameplay mechanics known as "asymmetrical gameplay," where one player used the GamePad screen to view different information than those using the TV.

  • Backward Compatibility: The console was fully backward compatible with Wii games and accessories (such as the Wii Remote, Nunchuk, and Balance Board), ensuring a large library of older titles from day one.

Classic Games

Despite not being a huge commercial success, the Wii U has an impressive library of games. Many of the critically acclaimed exclusives were later ported to the Nintendo Switch, including:

  • Mario Kart 8

  • Super Mario 3D World

  • Splatoon (series debut)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (also released on Switch)

The Wii U was officially discontinued in 2017 after the launch of the Nintendo Switch, which took the concept of portable/desktop gaming further and made it a huge success.
