Playstation 4

The PlayStation 4 (PS4) is Sony's fourth video game console, and the successor to the PlayStation 3. It was launched in November 2013 and competed in the eighth console generation with the Microsoft Xbox One.

Main Focus and Features

The PS4 marked a return to a gaming focus after the PS3's broad multimedia ambitions. It quickly became the dominant console of its generation thanks to a focus on developer friendliness and strong exclusive game titles.

  • Architecture: The PS4 switched to a more standard x86-64 AMD Jaguar processor, which made it much easier and cheaper for game developers to create games.

  • Social Gaming: It placed a heavy emphasis on social features, with a dedicated "Share" button on the controller that made it easy to share screenshots and video clips, as well as stream gameplay directly to platforms like Twitch and YouTube.

  • DualShock 4: The redesigned controller had an improved, more ergonomic grip, a touchpad, and a light bar that was used by the PlayStation Camera and in some games.

  • PlayStation Network (PSN) and PlayStation Plus: Online gaming on the PS4 required a PlayStation Plus subscription (unlike the PS3), which also gave subscribers access to free monthly games and cloud saves.

The PS4 models

The PS4 series was updated with two major revisions during its lifespan:

  • PS4 (Original): The first model (CUH-10xx/11xx/12xx).

  • PS4 Slim (2016): A smaller, lighter, and more power-efficient version that replaced the original PS4 as the standard model. It added support for 5 GHz Wi-Fi .

  • PS4 Pro (2016): A more powerful version (4.20 TFLOPS GPU) that supported 4K resolution and HDR (High Dynamic Range) in select games, as well as better performance for PlayStation VR.
