Nintendo 3DS
The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld game console from Nintendo, released in 2011 as the successor to the popular Nintendo DS. It quickly became known for its groundbreaking ability to display stereoscopic 3D graphics without the need for special glasses , an effect that can be adjusted or turned off entirely with a special slide switch.
Main Features and Innovations
The Nintendo 3DS built on the DS's dual-screen success, but added a number of new features:
Autostereoscopic 3D Display: The top display is a widescreen LCD that uses autostereoscopy to present 3D images, creating a depth effect that was unique to handheld consoles at the time.
Improved control: In addition to the traditional DS buttons, the 3DS introduced an analog stick called the Circle Pad , which provided full 360-degree motion control.
Motion sensors: The console contains both a gyroscope and a motion sensor , allowing players to control games by tilting and moving the console itself.
Three cameras: It has one internal camera and two external cameras that can take photos and videos in 3D .
StreetPass and SpotPass:
StreetPass allows consoles in sleep mode to automatically exchange data (such as Mii characters and game information) when they pass each other in real life.
SpotPass allows the console to connect to Wi-Fi access points to download updates and content, even in sleep mode.
Backward compatibility: The 3DS can play all Nintendo DS games and DSiWare, but they are displayed in 2D.
Model family (3DS family)
Like the DS, the 3DS family received several models with different features:
| Model | Characteristics |
| Nintendo 3DS (Original) | Introduced glasses-free 3D, analog stick, and motion sensors. |
| Nintendo 3DS XL | Launched in 2012 with significantly larger screens (up to 90% larger than the original) and better battery life. |
| New Nintendo 3DS/XL | Launched in 2014/2015. Had a more powerful processor , a new, small C-stick (additional analog stick), additional ZL and ZR shoulder buttons, improved 3D with face-tracking, and built-in NFC support for Amiibo. |
| Nintendo 2DS | A budget version launched in 2013, which removed the 3D feature. It had a flat, non-foldable design, but could play all 3DS and DS games. |
| New Nintendo 2DS XL | Combined the improved features of the "New" series (processor, C-stick, NFC) with a foldable design , but without the 3D effect. |
