LEGO Super Mario

LEGO Super Mario has revolutionized how we play with LEGO by combining physical building with digital interactivity. Since its launch in 2020, the concept has grown to become one of the most technologically advanced series from LEGO.

Here are the key facts about LEGO Super Mario as the universe looks in 2026:

1. Interactive technology

Unlike regular LEGO sets, this is controlled by interactive characters (Mario, Luigi and Peach).

  • LCD screens: The figures have small screens in their eyes, mouth and stomach that show facial expressions and reactions.

  • Color sensor: A sensor on the underside reads the color of the bricks (red means lava, blue is water, green is grass) and scans special barcodes on enemies and bonuses.

  • Bluetooth: The figures can be connected to an app or to each other for cooperative play (Co-op).

2. Mario Kart Revolution (New in 2025/2026)

The biggest shift in the series occurred in 2025 with the launch of LEGO Mario Kart .

  • Now the interactive figures can be placed in specially built cars.

  • The cars' movements and sound effects are synchronized with the figure, so you can "drive" races on the living room floor and collect virtual items just like in the game.

3. "D2C" – Large sets for adult collectors

Alongside the interactive play sets, LEGO has launched several massive exhibition models aimed at adults (18+):

  • 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES): A retro console and TV with a crank that moves Mario across the screen.

  • 71411 The Mighty Bowser: A huge, posable figure of Bowser.

  • 71426 Piranha Plant: A decorative display model that has become very popular as an interior detail.

4. Modular design

There is no "right" way to build a LEGO Super Mario course. The system is designed to be modular , allowing you to connect different Expansion Sets to create your own unique levels. The goal is always to get from the starting pipe to the finish line in 60 or 90 seconds while collecting as many coins as possible.

5. The absence of traditional minifigures

One unique fact about this theme is the almost complete absence of traditional LEGO minifigures. All characters, such as Toad, Yoshi, and Bowser Jr., are either brick-built or custom-cast figures to fit the scale of the large interactive Mario figure.
