Historical overview (Main categories)
1. The early beginnings (1993–1994)
This is where it all started with the now extremely valuable "Power Nine" cards.
Alpha, Beta, Unlimited (1993): The very first printings.
The first expansions: Arabian Nights , Antiquities , Legends , The Dark .
2. The "Blocks" era (1995–2018)
For many years, sets were released in blocks of three sets that shared the same world and mechanics. Some iconic examples:
Urza's Block (1998): Known to be extremely powerful ( Urza's Saga ).
Ravnica (2005): Introduced the 10 guilds we know today.
Innistrad (2011): The most popular horror set with werewolves and vampires.
Zendikar (2009): Focus on land areas and the giant Eldrazi.
3. Modern Standard set (2019–Present)
Wizards of the Coast moved away from the block structure and began releasing standalone sets for each quarter.
War of the Spark
Throne of Eldraine (Fairy Tales and Arthurian Legends)
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty (Cyberpunk meets feudal Japan)
4. Universes Beyond
This is set based on external worlds, which have become a massive part of Magic:
The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth (2023)
Warhammer 40,000 (Commander deck)
Fallout and Doctor Who
This is how the sets are divided today
To keep track of everything, releases are often divided into:
Standard-legal sets: The "regular" sets that follow the main story (e.g. Aetherdrift ).
Supplemental sets: Sets that go straight into formats like Modern or Commander (e.g. Modern Horizons ).
Remastered/Masters: Reprints of old cards with new frame or art ( Innistrad Remastered ).
